Theme In this piece I wanted to communicate the feeling of being overwhelmed and held back. The girl in my piece is drowning which represents her inability to get out of her current situation. She is being held back from something which can be seen through the character being physically pulled down and stuck in the seaweed. The seaweed represents all of the things that are holding her back and keeping her from moving forward.

When making my sketch for this project I had two ideas for the way the girl could be getting pulled down. One of these ideas was by some sort of plant and the other was by an octopus. In the end I decided to use the plants in the final piece because I felt they looked more interesting and allowed for me to continue the plant to more places then just on the characters leg which I thought looked more interesting.

Similarities
-Both mine and Sterrett’s piece, “Blondine on Tortoise” uses a limited color palette with cool tones of blues, aquas and greens. -Similar to Sterrett’s piece, “Proserpina and the Sea Nymphs.” I framed the outside of the piece with rocks. -Both my piece and Sterrett’s piece is set underwater. -I include aspects of nature and drew plants in a similar style as Sterrett -I used patterns to create texture in a similar way as Sterrett. -Both mine and Sterrett used thin delicate linework outlining each object with lots of details -My piece has larger dark foreground elements similar to Hiroshige's piece. Differences -The line work in my piece was done in color while Sterrett used black for most of her lines. -My piece is an illustration with a character used to tell a story while Hiroshige's pieces were only landscapes. |
