Theme For the theme of my piece I wanted to base it around how I and probably many others have been feeling since quarantine started. With the current state of the world it feels like things are constantly going wrong and there’s not much to do about it. No matter what you do things will continue to fall apart. It makes you feel kinda hopeless or even numb to everything around you. To convey this feeling I chose to have an atom bomb blowing up outside the girls window while she just lays in bed, unable to change the situation she is in. As the world falls apart she can’t even motivate herself to get out of bed.

Initially when planning for this piece I drew out two different versions of the perspective for it. The first one was a more straight on perspective and the second had a more angled perspective. Though I felt the perspective in the second drawing was more interesting I decided that the first one would make more sense for what I was trying to convey in the piece. I also thought having a straight perspective would fit more with the paper cut out style. Once I decided on the perspective I created a more cleaned up and detailed version of the sketch to work off of.

One thing that I experimented with was the lighting in the piece. I found some semi transparent yellow sticker paper that I thought would be interesting to test out as a way to add a soft shadow to the parts of the piece the lighting from the window would not be hitting. I thought doing this would add more visual interest and help to draw attention to the importance of the window. I cut out pieces of the paper and laid it over parts of my piece to see what types of effects I could get with it. This helped me get a better idea of what it would look like, but because the paper had a backing for the sticky part I had to keep in mind that it would be more transparent once I committed to sticking it down.

Similarities
-My piece used a limited color palette similar to both Walden and Le Nguyen. -Used very flat, bold shapes inspired by Walden. -My piece used soft colors which were inspired by many of Le Nguyen’s pieces. -Both my piece and pieces by Walden and Le Nguyen use unnatural colors for their subjects. Differences -My piece didn’t use the color black at all while Walden did very often. -My piece didn’t use linework while Le Nguyen’s pieces often had a very detailed use of line. |
