Theme Eyes is a block print inspired by my own experiences with anxiety. I have very bad anxiety especially when it comes to social situations. I often feel as if everyone around me is staring or judging me for everything I do. I fear everyone's opinion of me and it's often very suffocating. I tried to convey this feeling through my piece by having a girl looking very distressed surrounded by eyes which gives it a very suffocating feeling. She is unable to escape her worst fear, being judged.
My theme is connected to my inspirations. Lichtenstein often depicted dramatized situations in his pieces which is similar to the very dramatic way I represented the girls fear. The theme also relates to Karl Schmidt-Rottluff who often used line and contrast to portray intense emotion. This inspired me to try and do the same in my piece. |

When trying to make my piece I experimented with many things. One thing I experimented with was the type of tool to use. I tested out many tools and found that I liked how the V shaped carving tools worked best. A second thing I tested was the amount of ink I should use. At first I tried to use a very small amount of ink on my block print. This did not work very well because it left lots of areas on the print with a grainy texture. After this I decided to use more ink which worked much better. I also experimented with how much pressure I should use on my print with the baren. I found that it worked best to push down very hard to get the print to show up nicely.
